In response to the urgent needs of older adults affected by the recent Eaton Fire, Los Angeles County will host a special workshop tomorrow to support residents aged 62 and older who have reverse mortgages and are facing property damage or loss.

The workshop will take place on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at MonteCedro Senior Living Community, located at 2212 El Molino Avenue, Altadena, CA 91001.

This free event will provide attendees with expert guidance on understanding their reverse mortgage agreements and navigating the financial and legal implications of fire-related property damage. Spanish and Armenian translation services will be available to ensure the event is accessible to a wider audience.

“We need to ensure older residents in our community know they’re not alone,” said Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Kathryn Barger. “Recovering from a disaster is hard enough. Understanding reverse mortgages and legal obligations shouldn’t add more stress. That’s why we’re bringing experts together to offer meaningful, hands-on support.”

The group session will be led by Aimee Williams, Associate Vice President of Justice for Tenants, Homeowners, and Unhoused Individuals at Bet Tzedek Legal Services, who will walk participants through key information and address common concerns. Representatives from the Federal Housing Administration, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and local legal aid organizations will also be present to offer one-on-one consultations.

Participants will leave the workshop with a clearer understanding of their rights and options as they recover and make decisions about their housing and financial future.

Two representatives are available for media interviews today:
• Bertha Sanchez Hayden, Esq., Associate Vice President, Justice for Seniors & Dependent Adults, Bet Tzedek Legal Services (email requests to bhayden@bettzedek.org)
• Miguel Robleto, Program Manager, Area Agency on Aging (AAA) Branch, L.A. County Aging & Disabilities Department (email requests to mrobleto@ad.lacounty.gov; please copy norlandou@ad.lacounty.gov)

For media inquiries or to schedule an interview, please contact either spokesperson directly.
