At the close of today’s Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Public Hearing, Supervisors Kathryn Barger and Hilda L. Solis adjourned the meeting in memory of Sue Zhang, a towering figure in the Chinese-American community who passed away on April 20, 2026, at the age of 91.
A true pioneer and trailblazer, Ms. Zhang devoted more than four decades of her life to serving and uplifting the Chinese community in Southern California. Her commitment to civic engagement and cross-cultural bridge building earned her widespread admiration and respect across Los Angeles County and beyond.
“Sue Zhang was a visionary who dedicated her life to uniting and uplifting the voices of Chinese Americans across Southern California,” said Fifth District Supervisor Kathryn Barger. “Her founding of the Roundtable of Southern California Chinese-American Organizations stands as a testament to her extraordinary leadership and her belief in the power of community. Her legacy will endure in every organization she nurtured and every life she touched.”
In 2005, Ms. Zhang founded the Roundtable of Southern California Chinese-American Organizations. Under her visionary leadership, the organization grew and flourished, ultimately becoming the largest collective of Chinese organizations in Los Angeles County — a testament to her tireless advocacy and unifying spirit.
“Los Angeles County has been profoundly shaped by Sue Zhang and her commitment to uplifting the Chinese community across Southern California,” said Los Angeles County Board Chair and First District Supervisor, Hilda L. Solis. “Today we honor her memory and uplift her vision for a more united, empowered Chinese community and beyond. May her enduring legacy of leadership and lifelong community service continue to inspire us all.”
Ms. Zhang remained deeply engaged in her community throughout her life, inspiring generations of leaders and advocates. Her passing is a profound loss to all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside her.
Her legacy of leadership, service, and community building will be long remembered by the Chinese-American community and by all who believe in the power of unity and civic participation.
