This week, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to formally recognize Saturday, May 17, 2025, as Armed Forces Day—a day to honor and celebrate the bravery, dedication, and sacrifice of the men and women serving in the United States Armed Forces. The proclamation was made possible through a motion authored by Board Chair Kathryn Barger and co-authored by Supervisor Hilda L. Solis.
Supervisor Barger emphasized the importance of acknowledging military service through community recognition. “Armed Forces Day is a powerful reminder of the courage and commitment shown by the men and women who wear our nation’s uniform,” said Supervisor Kathryn Barger. “This proclamation is about ensuring their service and sacrifice are formally honored by Los Angeles County. Recognizing this day is one small way we show our deep gratitude for their dedication to protecting our freedoms.”
Supervisor Solis underscored the value of expressing gratitude to service members: “Here in Los Angeles County, Armed Forces Day remains a cherished occasion to honor the brave and dedicated men and women of the United States military,” said Chair Pro Tem and Supervisor for the First District Hilda L. Solis. “Let us remember the sacrifices made by those who gave their lives for our safety and acknowledge the strength and resilience of their families. I encourage everyone to take part in honoring this important day and the service members it represents.”
Los Angeles County has the largest veteran population of any county in the United States and is home to approximately 281,000 veterans and active-duty service members. Through its Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, the County works year-round to provide support, services, and resources for this community.
Los Angeles County encourages residents to participate in patriotic community events across the region and to reflect on the contributions of those who have served as a member of the United States Armed Forces.
