Last week, Supervisor Kathryn Barger cast the only “no” vote during the Board of Supervisors’ meeting opposing a motion mobilizing Los Angeles County’s team of lobbyists and governmental affairs professionals to support Governor Newsom’s effort to protect “California values.”
California lawmakers are convening today in the state capital, in response to Newsom calling a special session of the California legislature to fund California’s legal defense against the incoming Trump administration.
“My ‘no’ vote reflects my belief that preemptively adopting a confrontational approach with the incoming presidential administration is not in the best interest of our shared constituents,” said Supervisor Kathryn Barger. “Our County relies on the Federal Government for tens of billions of their discretionary funding. Addressing our most pressing challenges has always required working with our federal partners. I believe it’s important to work with the federal government and the incoming Trump Administration, finding common ground wherever possible to address shared challenges. Prematurely taking a confrontational stance undermines our obligation to serve all residents. Let’s not limit opportunities for constructive dialogue.”
The motion ultimately passed with a 4-1 vote by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
