Supervisor Kathryn Barger brought the spirit of Thanksgiving to the San Dimas Senior Center by hosting a memorable day of community service yesterday.
The event, made possible thanks to a collaboration between the YWCA San Gabriel Valley (SGV) and the City of San Dimas’ Parks and Recreation Department, brought joy and togetherness to the senior community. It attracted an enthusiastic turnout, with over 75 seniors and community members lining up hours before the doors opened to secure their spot for a fun-filled morning.
“It’s heartwarming to see our seniors come together to celebrate, connect, and enjoy the holiday season,” said Supervisor Kathryn Barger. “This event is about more than just providing a meal. It’s about fostering a sense of community and showing our appreciation for seniors who have contributed so much to our region.”
The morning’s activities kicked off with lively fellowship and an array of engaging board and lawn games designed to entertain and bring smiles to all who attended.
The senior center’s kitchen buzzed with activity as Supervisor Kathryn Barger’s team joined her in serving meals, distributing gift bags and food boxes to all attendees.
The highlight of the event was a delectable Thanksgiving meal prepared specially for the occasion. Seniors enjoyed traditional holiday favorites including turkey, cornbread, and pumpkin pie while sharing stories and creating new memories with friends, both old and new.
One senior citizen got up and spontaneously performed a hula dance on stage, donning a beautiful Hawaiian dress. “A gift for you,” she said, pointing to Supervisor Barger, as she walked off stage.
The YWCA SGV’s Chief Executive Officer, Debra Ward, addressed the audience before lunch was served. “This is a great venue and we appreciate you all supporting the senior program here,” Ms. Ward said. “We are an organization that proudly offers many service programs that reach 35 cities throughout the San Gabriel Valley. On behalf of the YWCA SGV, I wish you all a joyous and blessed holiday.”
Scott Wasserman, San Dimas’ Parks and Recreation Director, was on hand greeting community members while ensuring the municipal facility ran smoothly. “It is delightful that Supervisor Barger selected San Dimas as a recipient of your generosity,” Mr. Wasserman stated. “ Our seniors are very appreciative. I also thank the YWCA SGV for our ongoing collaboration to provide nutrition and case management services to our seniors. Your services strengthen our community and enable our seniors to age in place independently and with dignity.”
Supervisor Barger’s day of community service underscores her commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all residents, particularly seniors. “Events like these provide critical social connections and support,” commented Supervisor Barger. “This is especially needed during the holiday season when feelings of loneliness can be more intense. It is a pleasure being here to help out and spread some cheer.”
