Today, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved an ordinance that extends the Eaton Fire Disaster Interim Ordinance through August 22, 2026. The extension continues critical provisions that streamline rebuilding and recovery for residents affected by the devastating Eaton Fire earlier this year.

The ordinance, originally adopted on September 2, 2025, temporarily eases certain development restrictions in unincorporated areas impacted by the fire. It allows the County to facilitate faster reconstruction and permitting for properties suffering irreparable damage, establish a framework for temporary uses that support recovery, and maintain the streamlined Disaster Recovery Permit program with reduced fees and flexible development standards.

Supervisor Barger emphasized that extending the ordinance ensures a smooth continuation of recovery efforts while County staff develop a permanent disaster recovery framework.

“Our intent when we adopted the first disaster ordinance was to give Eaton Fire survivors a straightforward, streamlined path to rebuild,” said Supervisor Kathryn Barger. “Extending this ordinance ensures that residents can keep moving forward without unnecessary red tape or disruption. The streamlined disaster recovery process we’ve put in place has already made a meaningful difference, including shortening review times, reducing costs, and helping families take tangible steps toward returning home. This extension reaffirms our commitment to stand with the Altadena community until recovery is complete.”

The Eaton Fire Disaster Interim Ordinance also directs the Department of Regional Planning to continue developing a Permanent Disaster Recovery Ordinance that will include robust community engagement, particularly with displaced survivors.

Supervisor Barger expressed appreciation for County staff and the Department of Regional Planning for their leadership in advancing local recovery during today’s Board of Supervisors meeting. “I want to thank the Department of Regional Planning for their continued responsiveness and dedication,” Supervisor Barger stated. “This has been a Herculean effort to streamline rebuilding while maintaining responsible planning standards.”

The ordinance extension maintains critical momentum for the Altadena community’s recovery and underscores the County’s commitment to supporting residents as they rebuild their homes and lives.
