During today’s Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors meeting, Supervisor Kathryn Barger engaged Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone and officials from the County’s Department of Agricultural Commissioner/Weights and Measures (ACWM) in a robust discussion to clarify facts about brush clearance notices that will be mailed out starting next week to newly identified property owners subject to inspections.

Los Angeles County’s Fire Department will issue notices to a total of 131,321 properties across Los Angeles County on a rolling basis. In the Fifth District, a total of 66,031 properties are flagged for brush clearance inspections. Countywide, approximately 13 percent of the total are new properties that will receive a notice for the first time.

“We must ensure we’re providing clear information about these brush clearance notices – including how properties were identified and what happens during public hearing protest meetings,” said Supervisor Kathryn Barger. “Last year, I heard from many constituents who were very confused, so we need to be proactive this time around and plan for the clearest communication possible.”

During the discussion, Chief Marrone emphasized that property owners will be able to access individual consultations during the public hearing meetings about the brush clearance program. In the consultations, residents can ask questions about why their property was included, compliance deadlines, and what needs to be done on their property to remove fire hazards or public nuisances. In person, telephone, and video conference consultations will be made available.

This year’s inspection fee will be $151 and will be reflected in next year’s property taxes. Property owners who believe an error has been made may attend any of the five protest hearings that will be held in February 2024. Three of those hearings will be held in the Fifth District – Arcadia, Lancaster, and Santa Clarita. More information about the meetings, including dates and locations, can be found here.

A video of the question and answer exchange between Supervisor Barger, Chief Marrone, and ACWM officials can be accessed here.
