This week, Los Angeles County’s Public Works finished installing concrete barriers reinforced with steel and dirt berms at the southeast corner of Pearblossom Highway and 47th Street East in Palmdale.
The intersection was identified by multiple residents as being a very dangerous location in that area. Vehicles whiz by at high speeds on Pearblossom Highway, often exceeding the posted speed limit of 55 miles per hour.
The decision to implement the new safety structures on that particular corner was made by Public Works, after their traffic safety professionals evaluated traffic conditions at the intersection. They found that traffic hazards were being caused by people stopping to buy from street vendors and then attempting to merge back into this segment of the highway–a feat made extremely dangerous due to the high speeds of oncoming vehicles.
“My field office has heard from the community at large that drivers traveling down this road are aggressive and this has become a very dangerous intersection,” said Supervisor Kathryn Barger. “Keeping communities safe is my top priority. So, I appreciate our County’s roadway experts proactively making these safety improvements. This work will undoubtedly save lives by lessening opportunities for a terrible accident to happen.”
