Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger this week honored 12 young figure skaters from The Cube Ice and Entertainment Center, recognizing the Santa Clarita Valley athletes for a podium sweep at the 2026 U.S. Figure Skating National Showcase Championships in Colorado.
Each of the 12 skaters who traveled to the national competition last month placed on the podium. Supervisor Barger called this a testament to both the athletes’ dedication and the strength of the training community that shaped them.
“Every single one of these 12 skaters finished on the podium. That is an incredible accomplishment that deserves to be celebrated by our entire community,” Supervisor Kathryn Barger said. “These skaters combine technical skill, choreography, storytelling, creativity, and emotion to bring their performances to life. They are exceptional athletes, artists, and performers.”
Unlike traditional figure skating competitions, National Showcase events judge skaters on more than athletic technique. Routines are scored on choreography, storytelling, character, costume design and emotional performance, requiring skaters to work as much as performers and artists as athletes.
In her remarks, Supervisor Barger noted that many of the skaters began their training in The Cube’s youth programs, including “Learn to Skate” and “Camp Chillin’,” before advancing to elite-level competition. Supervisor Barger also thanked the City of Santa Clarita for stepping in to preserve The Cube when the facility was at risk of closing, calling it a critical community asset.
“Thank you to the City of Santa Clarita for stepping in when The Cube was in jeopardy of closing and preserving this important asset for the community,” Supervisor Barger stated.
