The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors today unanimously approved a motion introduced by Supervisors Kathryn Barger and Janice Hahn that authorizes their formal and public condemnation of Azerbaijan’s recent attacks on Armenia.

The Board committed to send a five-signature letter to United States congressional representatives that denounces the unprovoked attacks that took place on September 13, 2022 and killed more than 200 people.

“My supervisorial district is home to the largest population of Armenians outside of Armenia,” said Supervisor Kathryn Barger, who represents Los Angeles County’s Fifth District. “I introduced this motion to show support for my constituents’ loved ones and countrymen who have suffered injustice. Unprovoked attacks and military aggression cannot be tolerated. I am a strong believer in democracy and it’s my duty to do whatever is possible to show solidarity with my Armenian constituents.”

“The Armenian nation needs our full support now more than ever,” Supervisor Janice Hahn said. “The attacks this month have already killed five civilians and destroyed hundreds of homes. As the proud home of the largest Armenian population outside of Armenia, Los Angeles County is condemning these unprovoked attacks, standing up for the people of Armenia and their democracy, and calling for President Biden to end all assistance for Azerbaijan.”

Supervisors Barger and Hahn also authored a motion earlier this year proclaiming April as Armenian History Month as a tribute to the vibrant Armenian community, culture and heritage in Los Angeles County.
