Following today’s announcement by the Los Angeles County Office of the County Counsel launching a formal investigation into potential fraud tied to AB 218 claims, Supervisor Kathryn Barger issued the following statement:

“I strongly support County Counsel’s decision to initiate this formal investigation. We have a duty to protect legitimate victims and safeguard taxpayer dollars, and we will not waver from either responsibility.

I authored the motion that created the AB 218 Fraud Hotline because I believe that trust without verification is not enough. When billions are at stake, oversight is essential.

False claims spread like wildfire—they damage credibility, drain critical resources, and hurt the very survivors this law was meant to help. If you try to game the system, Los Angeles County will respond. We will protect survivors, defend taxpayers, and uphold the integrity of this process.”
