NoHo 5050 offers permanent supportive housing and specialty supportive services provided by Downtown Women’s Center

NoHo 5050, a new 40-unit affordable and supportive housing development for low-income families and women experiencing homelessness, officially opened its doors yesterday afternoon in North Hollywood.

A unique aspect of NoHo 5050 is its focus on housing survivors of gender-based trauma. The term is used to refer to a range of interpersonal violence that exists, including sexual violence, intimate partner violence, stalking, and other forms of violence and coercive control.  According to SAMHSA, gender-based violence survivors are at higher risk for depression, post-traumatic stress disorder. and suicide attempts.

“Having NoHo 5050 open its doors in a community I represent is truly something to celebrate,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger. “Our homelessness crisis can be resolved by collaborative initiatives like this one, where there’s resources committed to providing both housing and support services tailored to clients’ needs so they remain housed. I applaud Daylight Community Development, DECRO Corporation, and the Downtown Women’s Center for stepping up to be part of the solution in our fight against homelessness.”

The grand opening was hosted by the project’s three developers–Daylight Community Development, DECRO Corporation, and Downtown Women’s Center–who hailed NoHo 5050’s opening as marking a significant step forward in providing comprehensive care and support in the community.

“We’re thrilled to welcome our new residents and grateful for our partners who share our vision of creating community and healing for survivors of gender-based violence,” said Amy Turk, CEO of Downtown Women’s Center. “I am immensely proud to bring Downtown Women’s Center’s services to the North Hollywood community, ensuring that even more women and gender diverse individuals can gain and retain housing with safety, privacy, and dignity through our trauma-informed approach.”

“These projects cannot happen without meaningful collaboration and partnerships between our public and private partners,” exclaimed Greg Comanor, partner at Daylight Community Development. “NoHo 5050 proudly represents the policy goals of City, County, State and Federal agencies to build high-quality, mixed-income affordable and supportive housing in well-resourced neighborhoods. We are so proud of this community and what it will represent to our tenants.”

“Today marks a milestone in our journey towards providing housing for all and fostering inclusive communities,” said Ted Handel, CEO of DECRO. “With the opening of NoHo 5050, we’re not just building housing, we’re building a supportive community and providing dignified homes for individuals and families, especially those impacted by gender-based trauma.”

City of Los Angeles leaders also weighed in on NoHo 5050’s grand opening.

“We must continue to do all that we can to urgently confront the homelessness crisis as we bring more people inside and build more housing. Thousands more people came inside last year than the year before, and by working with partners like Downtown Women’s Center, we will continue to save lives,” said Los Angeles City Mayor Karen Bass. “I want to commend Downtown Women’s Center for bringing their services to more areas of the city to meet the unique needs of women who are experiencing homelessness.”

“Supportive housing developments like NoHo 5050 are an essential step in our long-term strategy to address chronic homelessness.”  said Los Angeles City Council President Paul Krekorian, who represents North Hollywood. “We know that domestic violence is one of the principal drivers of women’s homelessness, yet the housing resources specific to those who are impacted are wholly inadequate. This is personally important to me. Long before I was elected to public office, I was involved in the struggle against domestic violence as an attorney working pro bono, so I was especially committed to funding this project.  But we’re not stopping here.  This is one of six supportive housing projects we’ve opened in this District, with more on the way and another opening as early as next month.”

NoHo 5050 is located at 505 Bakman Avenue, North Hollywood, CA 91601. It is actively in the lease up process now. Vacancies are posted by the Los Angeles City Housing Department and will be allocated through a lottery system.
